dog eaters. Is it safe to eat dog meat in Cambodia?

Although dog meat can provide a lot of benefits, it can also be harmful to human health if dog meats are not well checked and cooked.

“ If we eat the meat which was not well checked by vets and relevant authorities, it could be dangerous to the eaters. There are two kinds of communicable diseases: one was caused by bacteria and another one was caused by virus,” said Mr. Oern Thoin, Deputy Director of Experiment Department of the Prek Leap National College of Agriculture.

He explained that If the meat is well cooked, the bacteria will die but the virus will not. For instance, in the case of rabies is a virus-caused disease; people will be infected by eating infected dog meat although the meat is well cooked.

More importantly, Mr. Oern Thoin did not believe that the dog meat would be well cooked before being served.

Mr. Oern Thoin raised a number of diseases such as rabies and infections caused by some kinds of parasites. He added that killing animals illegally could cause harm to the health of other animals and human due to the infections from the dead animals.

Mr Oern Thoin suggested that quality of meat should be well checked by vets and relevant authorities before being eaten or sold in the market.
